MOT (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo) |
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo had its renewal open on March 29, 2019 after it temporary closed about 3 years ago. It has been always my favorite museum, and I'm glad that they are finally finishing their renewal and back open to public again.
Personally I think their website is hard to read, but the actual museum and current exhibition of MOT is worth visiting. About the shortened name MTO..., is probably following museums like MoMA or Met. MOT is one of very few museums in Tokyo that allows visitors to take photos unless it is mentioned to not to. So this blog is filled with images.
MOT Collections
Pleased to meet you, New Acquisitions in recent years.
Exhibition on View: Friday, 29 March- Sunday, 16 June 2019
Unfortunately this exhibition just closed, but you can still see some photos from it here.
"Currently, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo holds some 5,400 pieces in its collection, which spans the modern and contemporary periods with a focus on art of the postwar years. MOT regularly features the works in "MOT Collection" exhibitions, choosing a different theme each term to show the diverse appeal of contemporary art, and contriving to enable viewing the same artwork from different perspectives.
Having newly acquired some 400 works during its three-year closure, the museum will focus on these new acquisitions in its "MOT Collection" exhibitions this fiscal year, to mark its Grand Reopening. In term one, the exhibition will spotlight works produced in the 2010s and also unveil earlier collected works that have undergone restoration. In MOT's newly renovated galleries, thus, people familiar with MOT's collection and those viewing it for the first time will be able to enjoy fresh encounters with each of the works." (From the MOT Official Website: https://www.mot-art-museum.jp/en/renewal2019/)
I was in Kyoto a few days ago before visiting the MOT. In Kyoto, Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art was showing Bernard Leach. I wonder if it was coincident to see Bernard Leach in MOT in Simon Fujiwara's video work.
