Atelier Talk: Beyond The Surface

Natsumi Goldfish
Small Kamidana, Oil on Wood, 3"x3"(2021)

Good morning everyone,
I am pleased to have these four pieces in this blog are currently included in an exhibition "Toy Box" at Gristle Gallery. Please contact me or the gallery(gallery@gristletattoo.com) for inquiries(yes, these paintings are currently available for your collection).

Kami-dana was in most houses in Japan.
We bring offerings, like the fast morning fresh water and cut flowers and food, we dust off, we play, and start a day from greeting the Kamidana..., for the god of all (Yaoyorozu no kami) and our ancestors' dead spirits. Not just offering but we do talk to them, we ask gods, we do share our wishes too sometimes.

A Hollow to the Summer
Oil on Wood, 5"x5", 2021

What I painted in this series was things that are imaginary, in the sense that none of the objects really exist in the real world, but every element of them, something alike, do actually exist around the world.

When it comes to art, I am fascinated by the ones that expand in my mind, with the artist's guidance and with my participation. Not just a pretty picture, but it requires the other half to use their brain to participate, that makes them put themselves in, to really see. That is the kind of work I always imagine and dream to make and worth it to be there in the world where we already have enough things.

Wild Animals know the world is beyond their horizons

Art can have the same quality as spiritual practices, they let us see things that are not exactly there but it's suggested to see by seeing the art. They can help realization of something that is there but difficult to see from one's perspective, something that is one and at the same that is two or more. These small pieces are a relatively easy entrance of such quality of art you can experience.

Some people already have such a precious experience through meditation, dream, and or through art, or something else, while some of us haven't yet to have, but regardless, it is meaningful to keep something like a small window to let you come back and see/experience this very simple yet immersive sense.

If you can relate any of the work with yourself, your memories, your dream, your people, your questions, your wonders, then these art will expand inside you to a much bigger piece beyond their physical scale.
