Brooklyn's Art Scene | FINGER FOOD at THE HAND -Artist-run Exhibition Space in Bushwick-

Fingerfood @ The Hand | Review by Artist
Written by Natsumi Goldfish

THE HAND is Artist-run exhibition space in Bushwhack run by a group of Brooklyn artists.

On the night of August 19th, I was at Bushwick in Brooklyn to attend one of the opening receptions.

"Finger Food"

The exhibition is on view until September 4th.

"Food is our tether to this planet. It is the proof that no human is a closed system. We must, literally, take pieces of the world around us and put it inside our bodies, or die.  Food is a perennial theme in art. Eating it, preparing to, displaying it, venerating it.  Here is a something that we craft from the inside out to please as many of our senses as possible..."(-The Hand

I think of finger-food as something we all enjoy, sometimes alone and sometimes with someone close to us. It is something that gives us comfort, reminds us of home and family and close people in our daily life. It is also something that shows character of personal preferences, different generations, cultures, and countries.

This exhibition is a curated group exhibition, most of paintings (if not all) are painted specially for this show. I get a feeling that most of works are not only talking about food(finger food) as a subject but also the paintings themselves has a feeling of quickly painted as inspired.

There are still numerous playful lively  exhibitions today happening at underground art scene in Brooklyn. It is something that a commercial gallery exhibition cannot offer. This kind of exhibition has something the should be valued as a platform that artists and curators make connections and also experiments with what art today could do. It is between a home concert and a public art salon.

Make sure to visit the gallery located only a few blocks away from Wilson Station, L train.
